She was born in Syracuse, NY to Charles and Ella Whitwell. She graduated from Eastwood High School and Powelson Business School.
She worked at GE and Carrier in computers, then worked for the North Syracuse Central School district for nearly 20 years. After retiring, she was elected to the North Syracuse Board of Education for 2 terms serving as Vice President. She volunteered at Literacy Volunteers, St. Rose of Lima School and served on the board of the Pitcher Hill Apartments.
Lucile enjoyed traveling, reading, old movies, walking with her friends at Onondaga Lake Park and watching SU basketball and football. Her hobbies included genealogy and jigsaw puzzles.
Additionally, she was a member of the YMCA for over 20 years where she enjoyed water aerobics and her many friends. Her most joyful times were spent with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lucile was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 65 years Stanley Petroff; sister Jean Schmidt and brother Richard Whitwell.
She is survived by her two sons John Petroff (Gale Mittelman) of Long island and Chuck (Nancy) Petroff of Liverpool; her daughter Karen (Roger) O’Neill of Delray Beach, Florida; five grandchildren, Rachel (Marc) Kessler, William, Matthew, David and Joseph Petroff; three great grandchildren Hadas, Judah and Nathan Kessler and nieces Diane Lewis and Jeanne Dupre.
Visitation will take place Sunday 4-7 PM at New Comer Funeral Home, N. Syracuse.
A funeral service will immediately follow. Burial will be private.
