Alfred Arthur Rainbow Jr, 89, of Liverpool passed away October 18 at Elderwood Nursing Home surrounded by his family.

Born in Syracuse on December 30, 1927, he was the son of Alfred Arthur Sr. and Gertrude Newman, both of Syracuse.

He served as a hospital corpsman in the United States Navy during the end of WWII in 1946 and later returned and served until 1952. Alfred then earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Syracuse University in 1955. He worked as a licensed professional civil engineer for the NYS Department of Transportation until his retirement in July, 1996. Alfred was a professional bowler as a member of The Canadian PBA in both Huntington, WV and Syracuse, NY. Alfred had a passion for woodworking, spending many hours in his workshop crafting furniture and cabinetry. Golfing, particularly as a member of Beaver Meadows Country Club, was a favorite activity for Alfred as was supporting the New York Yankees and Syracuse University sports. He was also a member of Northminster Presbyterian church.

Besides his parents, he is also predeceased by his brother, Eugene Rainbow of Syracuse.

Alfred is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Winona Louise (Martin) Rainbow; three daughters, Susan Bryan of Phoenix, Cindy Rainbow-Altman (James Altman) of Baldwinsville and Jodi Gunther of DeWitt; Three sons, Michael Rainbow of Syracuse, John Rainbow of Phoenix, and Alfred Arthur Rainbow III of Liverpool; six grandchildren including Paige Altman, Morgan Gunther, Hannah Gunther and two brothers, Gary (Patty) Rainbow and Alan (Rosemary) Rainbow.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, October 24th from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM at New Comer Cremations & Funerals 705 N. Main St. North Syracuse. Funeral services will follow the calling hours and will begin at 12:00 PM.

Contributions in Alfred’s memory may be made to Northminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 7444 Buckley Road, North Syracuse, NY 13212.
