Rose Marie was born on August 17, 1933 in Syracuse to Stella (Giemza) and George Caporin. She was a 1951 graduate of Paul V Moore High School, in Central Square.

After graduation she worked at Crouse-Hinds and later as a secretary at Paul V Moore High School where she met and forged lifelong friendships with many of the teachers and coworkers there, retiring in 1995. In the last 10 years of her life she worked for CP of the North Country and for the Resource Center for Individuals with Disabilities. During those years she cared for her autistic grandson, Ben and was a driving force in Ben’s recovery and development. She will be remembered for her care and devotion to all of her grandchildren.

She was a member and past president of the Auxiliary of the Fuller/Taylor American Legion Post 915 in Central Square as well as member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was previously married to Fay Hemings of North Bay, NY. She married Herb Mattice in 1988 and enjoyed many years of travelling, skiing, camping at Nick’s Lake, dancing the jitterbug and entertaining in their home in Central Square. Herb predeceased her on April 16, 2010.

She is survived by her three children, Fayellen, Canton, NY and Richard Hemings and Tom Hemings of Boynton Beach, FL, sisters Carol Ann and Karen, grandchildren Rich Hemings Jr., Charleston, SC, Ryan Hemings, Conroe,TX, Brandon Bartley, Charleston, SC and Ben Bartley, Canton, NY. She was predeceased by siblings Jackie, Joyce and George.

Roe will be remembered for her love of gardening, entertaining and cooking and there are many who reaped the benefits of her efforts in that regard, from her loaves of raisin bread, her famous galumpkis and her dozens of Christmas cookies she baked each year.

Funeral services will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home at 705 North Main St., North Syracuse, NY on Saturday, December 2, at 11am with committal to follow at Hillside Cemetery in Central Square. Calling hours will be from 4pm until 7pm on Friday, December 1st at Newcomer.
