Douglas H. Bunston of Manlius, NY passed away on May 23, 2019 at the age of 98. He was the husband of the late Eleanor Winans Bunston who predeceased him in 2003.

Born April 4, 1921 in Cortland County, NY to Bertha (Loeschke) and Charles Bunston, Doug grew up in Niagara Falls, NY. He was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School. Doug proudly served during WWII in the US Army Air Corps. He was part of the D-Day invasion and was stationed in France until VE Day. After being discharged, he attended and graduated from Niagara University. Doug was employed in a management position at Carborundum Corporation where he worked until his retirement in 1982. He then consulted for a number of years as an expert legal witness in court cases involving Carborundum products.

Douglas and Eleanor were married in 1949 in Niagara Falls, NY. They lived in Niagara Falls and, in 1978. moved to North Tonawanda, NY. As best friends and always the best dancers on any dance floor, Doug and Eleanor taught ballroom dancing in their early years of marriage. He was active in Lutheran Church activities and was an avid reader and golfer. In 2003 he moved to Manlius, NY to live with his daughter and son-in-law. As an octogenarian Doug enjoyed exploring his new community, traveling the world, and visiting Florida. He maintained an optimistic and curious outlook throughout his long life, and danced whenever possible.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Florence and Don Saleh. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Paul (Amanda) Saleh and Erica (Logan Hill) Saleh, a niece, Deborah Winans, and nephew, Jim Evert. Doug adored his five great-grandchildren and loved their visits. He enjoyed the special friendship of Manlius neighbor and travel companion, Elaine Dalton.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers of Menorah Park for their sensitive care for Doug. Doug was very thankful for the GI Bill that enabled his dream of a college degree to become reality, and his family appreciates the Veterans’ Administration for its assistance with Doug’s eldercare.
Services will be private with a memorial gathering for his large extended family. His family would appreciate those who wish to honor Doug’s memory do so by donating to a charity or cause that they care about, as Doug frequently did, and by visiting a friend or loved one who would love to see them.
