Robert Henry Read
1919 - 2021

Robert Henry Read ( Grandad, BobBob, Dad, “Commander”) 101, of Liverpool, NY, a proud member of the “greatest generation”, left this world on May 30th, 2021. Born and educated in London, England, he proudly served in the Royal Navy for 17 years from the date of his mobilization, 29th of August 1939 (6 days before declaration of WWII on the 3rd of September 1939) until leaving the Service as Lieutenant Commander in 1956. From 1942 until 1946, in the Submarine service, he saw much successful action as a Navigating Officer for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Postwar he served as XO in surface ships and saw service in Korea.

He was predeceased in 2008 by his wife, Betty, also a member of the “greatest generation”, whom he met in 1944 when she was serving as a WREN (Womens Royal Naval Service) in his submarine depot ship in Ceylon (Sri Lanka).

He leaves, in the USA, daughters, Alison (Ronald) Post and Philippa (Michael Kalet) Read; grandchildren, Brian (Lauren Michel) Post, Sarah (Jeremy Holmes) Post and Harry Kalet; his “mistress” and beloved tabby cat, Rosie; in England, a nephew, grandnephews and great-great nephews and nieces.

He was a retiree of the Black Clawson Company.

A gathering to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, June 19th, 2021 from 2 until 6pm at 604 Hickory Street, Liverpool, NY 13088.

At his request his body has been gifted to the SUNY Upstate Medical University Anatomical Gift Program.

Donations in his memory may be made to Clear Path for Veterans, 1223 Salt Springs Rd. Chittenango, NY 13037, SPCA of Tompkins County, 1640 Hanshaw Rd. Ithaca, NY 14850 or Friends of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Caradon Town House, Caradon Town, LISKEARD, Cornwall, PL 14 5AR England.
