George K. Turnes
1947 - 2022

George Keeler Turnes, 75, passed away at home surrounded by his loving wife and children on November 26, 2022. George was born on January 22, 1947 to Matilda and George W. Turnes, both proceeding him in death.

George was a lifelong employee of the New York State Thruway Authority until retiring with 35 years of service. As a young man, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in the Vietnam War. He went on to have a long career in the Air National Guard serving in Desert Storm with the 174th Fighter Wing. He proudly served his country for 30 years.

In his spare time, he enjoyed sitting on his deck with a cold drink, gardening, and traveling with his wife to the beach. If he had it his way, he would spend his days walking the beach collecting seashells.

George is survived by his wife of 52 years, Kathleen Turnes; children, Greg Turnes, Christine (Samuel) Dana, Karen Altman, Mary Ellen (Richard) Hunt; grandchildren, Ethan, Noah and Lilian Dana; Keiler Altman; Alexandra, Austin and Andie Jo Hunt; and a great grandchild, Octavia Rose Dana; and many loving extended family members and close friends.

A military service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 4069 Howlett Hill Rd, Syracuse, NY 13215. Memorial contributions may be made in George’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project Click Here
