Bill,
I am so terribly sorry that you were not able to witness a public planting of an American Chestnut containing oxalate oxidase. Your courage in the face of your diagnosis is an example for us all. When an American Chestnut Hall of Fame is created, you will surely be one of the first inductees.

Bill Powell and I shared space within a small community of plant pathologists; me as a PhD student at the University of New Hampshire in the 1980s , and later as a researcher just up the road at Cornell's experiment station in Geneva. We were linked through our students, postdocs and fellow faculty. I was fascinated by his work, and followed it for years. Ultimately, I was able to interview him about his lifelong work to restore the American Chestnut to the American landscape just 2 years ago for a podcast (www.plantopiapodcast.org) produced by our professional society. Bill was gracious, and kind, it was one of the most enjoyable episodes I had the pleasure to host. He was not just supremely knowledgeable. He was a joy to talk too; so enthusiastic and hopeful and satisfied at having reached a lifelong goal. I was so sad to hear of his illness and his passing so soon after the diagnosis. However, he was obviously at peace with his accomplishments in life. Undeniably, he'd want to stick around a bit longer to watch us enjoy the fruits of his labor. My condolences to his family. This hurts. We are all sad to see him go, but so grateful to have known him.

Bill,
My dear brother in law, you were always the right husband for my sister. I first met you when you were dating Beth I observed the care you showed for her and thought you were very well suited for each other.
Through the years you proved me right.
Though you were a quiet man, you were always ready to have fun. Those videos you and Beth made during the pandemic were hilariuos. Whenever we got together as family, you jumped right into the humor and somtime crazy games we concocted. I remember Jake and I writing a little skit and the rest of the family acting it on video. You had a part and went right along with the weirdness!
I will miss you! But knowing I will get to see you and live eternally with you in the presence of the Lord.
See you there!

Bill will always be the person I credit for helping me become who I am today. He graciously accepted me into his lab as a grad student, guided me through some really tough times, and supported me at every step. My best memories are because of Bill and the lab culture he created. I will forever be thankful to him and the calm presence he brought to every situation. May his memory be eternal.

Dr. Powell was my PhD advisor and I spent over 5 years in his lab working on the American Chestnut Restoration project. He is so positive and patient; and is truly an exceptional advisor. I could not ask more. I still remember the first day being a TA for the Genetics Lab. Dr. Powell walked me over to the lab session, the room was full of students, he introduced me to the class, and let me begin the instructions. I was so nervus at the beginning, but he didn’t leave me there with all the students, he stood on the side for a while and let me continue. Seeing him there had made me feel secure and supported, and that feeling had continued throughout my time in Dr. Powell's lab, especially in many challenging times during my PhD study. Dr. Powell was always optimistic, patient, and believed in his students’ ability and challenged them to be their best selves. I am so grateful to have Dr. Powell as my advisor. I also remembered when I got my 1st job offer from BMS, I was so excited but at the same time quite uncertain if I could do the job well since it is so different than what I’m used to. Dr. Powell said that I earned a PhD, the highest degree, and PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy. He made me realize that it is not about the techniques or the specific research area, it is about the ability to solve problems, and that is applicable in any jobs. It is that encouragement and that believe Dr. Powell instilled in me helped me through many difficult times in my career all these years.
Dr. Powell had made soooooo much contribution to restore the mighty American Chestnut!!! It will forever leave a mark in the history!! The American Chestnut Trees that will be released to the forest will continue to provide positive impact for centuries to come. He made such a difference in this world that will benefit future generations. It is a remarkable achievement, and he was so humble, which is truly amazing and inspirational.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Dr. Powell will always be remembered for the impact he made, the passionate and inspirational individual he was, and the kindness and compassion he showed. I will always remember Dr. Powell and I look forward to seeing the day the American Chestnut trees are released to the wild.

I never met Bill, but always admired his dedication to science, the American Chestnut tree and forestry technology. He inspired me to help the cause through donations of time and money. His work's legacy will impact all future generations, whether they know his name or not. He will be greatly missed.

I’m very sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Powell. As a graduate student, I worked with the Chestnut Project and Dr. Powell served on my graduate committee. My experiences with Dr. Powell were always warm and insightful, and he was very nice and helpful. My condolences go out to all of his loved ones.
~ Anuli Onwumelu - November 17, 2023
Dr. Powell was my Masters advisor, and I am so grateful to him for accepting me into his lab and giving me the opportunity to learn to be a scientist. My love for research, molecular biology, and chestnut trees all come from Bill's guidance, mentoring, and passion. It is my hope that I can have the same impact on students' lives that Bill had on mine and countless other ESF grads. He truly exemplified what it is to be an educator in his role as a professor and through his tireless efforts to reach the public about the importance of conservation and the American chestnut. My sincere condolences to all his family and friends.

It was under Bill’s guidance that I successfully completed my Ph.D. and the first postdoctoral training. He had a significant role in what I became and accomplished. Bill was a very kind advisor with lots of patience. When I got frustrated about failed DNA extraction, he rolled up his sleeves and did the demonstration. It was Bill who made me realize that I was supposed to choose one type of salad dressing when being offered the options (instead of having them all). He went above and beyond to hire me as a postdoc so that my family could stay together. He always had a sweet smile on his face and soft-spoken. He used to fold paper airplanes for my boy when he came to the students’ office. He cared very much about students’ well-being. One time he reminded me that I needed to get out of the lab and have some breaks. I will cherish the eight years of experience in Bill’s lab. I will miss him dearly. And I will try to hit a vehicle break with ease, as Bill once reminded me.

He brought my 43-year-old projects to preserve the genetic diversity of Michigan American Chestnuts into the SUNY-ESF's work. I will always be grateful for that opportunity to contribute to the national effort.
It is sad that, as far as he brought the project, he could not accompany it to his envisioned goal. It is up to the rest of us to get the ball across the line.
~ Christopher Hull - November 16, 2023
I knew Dr. Powell by reputation only. My husband Tom (ESF '75) followed his research closely for many years and held Dr. Powell in the highest esteem. He was an inspiration for Tom's involvement in the work of American chestnut restoration here in Ohio. I most sincerely hope that the family and friends of Dr. Powell will find some comfort in knowing how widely his influence was felt and how loved he was for his brilliance, his vision, and his dedication. My most heartfelt condolences to the Powell family.
~ Peg Brochu - November 16, 2023
I will never forget Dr. Powell and will forever be grateful to him for teaching me genetics and molecular techniques. This was a field I felt was impossible to learn and only for the super smart brainiacs; Dr. Powell was always very kind and made it very clear and accessible to learn. If it were not for him, my life would have been different since I built the foundation of my career and livelihood off of what he had taught me, and I will always be grateful. I am very sorry for his family and the SUNY ESF community to have lost such a great person and teacher. The good thing is that he has taught so many students, and his spirit will live on to continue to teach future generations of plant scientists. His spirit will also be planted with the future Chestnut trees, and he will never be forgotten.
~ Brittany Cronk - November 16, 2023
I didn't know Dr. Powell but followed his work on the American Chestnut. I really appreciate all he has done to bring this great and important tree back.
~ John Landwehr - November 16, 2023
I was a student of Dr. Powell's (& Dr. Maynard) some 20+ years ago and even now I can remember his passion for chestnuts. It would please him to know I've been trying to get them established in my small woodlot here in northern Vermont and have actually been having success.
I'm very sorry for your loss,
Sincerely,
Zachary Hart

To the family and friends of Bill, Bill will be sorely missed by many including the research community where I was priveledged to meet him. He and my father, Dr. Frank Gouin, also worked together in the battle to save the American Chestnut tree from extinction. It was always a highlight of my work year to meet with him over the years and share his excitement as his research progressed. May it bring you peace that he touched so many and made a difference.

Very sad to hear of Bill Powell's passing. Bill was a very down to earth, kind & caring man.
He was always very patient with every situation that arose and always willing to explain and
answer any questions about his & Chuck Maynard's Chestnut project. He will be greatly missed.
Condolences to all friends and family.

The American chestnut research and restoration work of Bill Powell will live on in the forests of eastern North America. I am grateful to have known Bill as a scientist, communicator, teacher, and leader, for over twenty years through the New York State Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation. "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Dr. Powell, it was a pleasure to have been a student of yours. You were a gifted professor who made learning so fun and engaging. Your work with the chestnut trees was your pride and joy and to see and read about how much your hard work has truly changed the way we see and value trees is such an honor! You will forever be missed, may your spirit live on. My deepest condolences to your beloved friends and family. You will forever be missed.

Dear Dr. Bill family
I never knew Bill personally. My connection is with Chestnut tree restoration. I admired his dedication and commitment to the restoration of a favorite tree, and as alumni of ESF.
I have planted two orchards of chestnuts and awaiting Bill hybrid. I will call them Bill.
~ Richard Jarvis - November 15, 2023
Dr. Powell was gracious and accessible to all of us. When I first joined the American Chestnut Foundation in NYS and had questions about the transgenic tree, he responded right away to my email in spite of the fact that I am neither a student or a colleague. He had a rare combination of intellectual rigor and friendliness to all. He will be sorely missed.

From the Kentucky Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation:
We are so sad to hear of the loss of Dr. Bill Powell. Several KY Chapter Members knew Bill personally and professionally. All of us know Bill through his ground breaking work with American Chestnuts at SUNY-ESF, and through many on line meetings and videos where Bill shared his work and his Mission **** He is highly respected and appreciated here in Kentucky, as we know he is across all of the Appalachian states who are working to Restore the American Chestnut back into its native forests. Bill's family.... and his team mates at SUNY..... can be "totally proud" of Bill's collaboration and sharing with thousands of people over his many years at SUNY-ESF. * * * * * *
We have all lost a treasure and promise to do our part to help complete Bill's Mission !!!
Very Sincerely and on behalf of the Kentucky Chapter

Years ago Bill and Chuck Maynard spoke at a meeting of the PA chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation (PATACF). It was early in their project but I thought it was extremely exciting news of the potential development of a blight resistant American chestnut. His legacy is huge. I’ve always thought it Nobel worthy, it’s that significant.

It is with great sadness that I write this. Although I interacted with Bill only a few times during my tenure at ESF (1994 to 2023), he was always a large campus presence because of his wide heart and years-long dedication to restoration of the American Chestnut tree. His legacy will live on in the woods and forests of the Northeast. My condolences go to to Bill's family for this irreparable loss.
~ Siddharth Chatterjee - November 14, 2023
I was hired the same year Bill was. I worked with him until I retired in 2019. He never complained about anything in the 30 years I knew him...and was one of the most productive faculty members. Such a nice guy and stellar researcher. So very sad for his family and their loss.

Dear Dr. Powell
You received me warmfully in your lab, where I spent three of the most memorable and significant months of my professional life. You showed me that to achieve greatness in science we must be optimistic, objective and simple. This shaped me humanely and as a researcher.
Thank you.
