Alexander C. "Charlie" Konz, a man whose laughter could light up any room and whose warmth touched every life he encountered, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Syracuse on May 3, 2026. Born on October 29, 1954, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Charlie brought with him a spirit filled with joy, kindness, and a wonderfully sharp wit. At a young age Charlie had great talent on the basketball court, having won several trophies.
Charlie devoted many years of his life to Syracuse University, where he worked diligently until his retirement in 2021. His commitment and passion for his career were evident to all who knew him, but it was in retirement that he truly embraced his personal passions. With a camera in hand, he captured the beauty of the world through his love of photography. Charlie enjoyed golfing in his later years. Most profoundly, he found great happiness camping alongside his beloved wife, Janice-a testament to the deep and abiding partnership they shared.
Charlie was a very funny individual, always ready with a joke or a playful quip that made those around him burst into laughter. His sense of humor was a constant source of comfort and delight, binding family and friends in shared joy and cherished memories.
He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Janice Konz; his son, Jeremy Degroot, and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Croop; his brother, Michael Konz; and his two sisters, Carol Calarco and Margaret (Bob) Nicholson. Charlie’s heart extended warmly to his grandchildren-Hailey, Brandon, and Ryden-and to his great granddaughter, Marceline, along with several nieces and nephews who hold his memory dear. As they carry forward his legacy, they find strength in the love and laughter he shared so freely.
Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Jeanine Konz, whose memory lives on in their son’s enduring kindness and spirit.
Though Charlie’s passing leaves a profound void, his legacy of laughter, love, and adventure will forever echo in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him. His life was a radiant tapestry of humor, devotion, and spirited joy-a true gift to all who crossed his path.
