Alphonso Hamm was born on December 7th, 1951, in Darlington, SC, to Abron and Albenia Hamm. He was the youngest child and only son of eight children, and this gave him a special role in the family. It was often said jokingly that he was the original “boo,” as his elders and siblings affectionately nicknamed him “Booboy.”
As a child, he attended Brockington Elementary School and Pine Junior High School. Alphonso attended Mayo High School as a teenager. He also enjoyed learning practical life skills and trades, which cultivated his knowledge and skills for farming and fishing.
As a young adult, Alphonso, in his naturally bold and ambitious nature, made a temporary move to Utah to complete his education. Alphonso completed his education in Utah with his equivalency diploma and his certification as a master auto mechanic.
He then left Utah for New York City, where three of his older sisters already resided and were waiting to welcome him into the next chapter of his life.
He was able to obtain a position as a successful line mechanic with General Motors for nine years. When GM closed their doors on the East Coast, Alphonso made the choice to work for smaller garages rather than leave New York City to follow the bigger auto manufacturer. His experience and expertise were much appreciated, and he found great success in his field.
During this time, he proudly fathered his two sons, Antwan Hamm and Kevin Hamm.
Alphonso’s life was not without struggles, which he would ultimately overcome. Still, he was always a strong believer in diligence and hard work to provide for family.
It was also during his time living in New York City that he met the love of his life, Lutricia Duncan. Although life’s circumstances would bring distance between them for some years after their initial union, they found their way back to each other in later years. In their reunion, Alphonso came to share a loving bond with Lutricia’s children, Heamean, Tisha, and Roger. He now embarked on a new chapter of life with his beloved Lutricia at his side, along with two additional sons and a daughter to add to his immediate family.
Alphonso remained in New York, but eventually left the city to be with his beloved Lutricia and his children to start anew Upstate New York. It would be the love and support of Lutricia, along with the new scenery, that helped him overcome the struggles of his youth.
In later years, Alphonso would become a proud grandfather through the children he gained in his life shared with his beloved Lutricia. He would also renew his relationship with God and would spend hours in prayer and discussing the Bible and the greatness of God with anyone who cared to share in the “Good Word.”
He also enjoyed applying his knowledge of farming from his early years to plant faithfully in his backyard, where he grew everything from collard greens to radishes to store for the winter. He also enjoyed fishing, as he had learned to do with his father, beyond just a hobby as a youth in South Carolina.
His focus was set mainly on his spirituality and his family. He cherished his beloved and devoted Lutricia and developed a special father-son bond with his youngest son, Roger, who remained lovingly by his side during the last moments of his life.
In his final days, he remained cheerful and in good spirits. Although, in rare and brief moments, he would try to gently prepare his loved ones for his departure. “Please don’t worry about me if I go. I’m going to be with my God and loved ones,” he would say.
We will miss him greatly. He was special from birth and loved by all he touched.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Parthenon Jackson, Marjorie Pinkney, Francena Byrd, Clarice Hamm-Dove, and Shirley Ann Henry.
He leaves behind Lutricia; his siblings, Dorothy Mae Dubois and Betty Ruth Hamm; and nieces and nephews, Farris Hamm, Alonso Jackson, Jefferey Pinkney, Princessa Jackson, Betty Jane Hamm, Lameil Dove, Chanelle Dames-Dove (niece-in-law), Dennis Pinkney, and many more loved ones to mourn.
There will be no services at this time.
