August F. "Duke" Butera, Jr., affectionately known as "Duke," passed away peacefully on June 15, 2025, in Syracuse, NY, surrounded by his loving family after an illness. Born on June 21, 1965, in Syracuse, he was a man of remarkable warmth and generosity, often described as having the biggest heart of any human being. Duke was not only a kind soul but also a devoted father and loving grandfather, whose pride in his family shone brightly.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Sandra Wallis; his children, Stephanie Butera-Brown and his cherished grandchildren, Barbaro Noda, Messiah Acevedo, Elias-Ramon Acevedo, and Isabella Butera. Duke was also deeply loved by his siblings, Romona Warren, Carole Butera, Roxanne Butera, and Robin (Ron) Smith, along with many nieces and nephews, including Timothy Lobdell.
Duke's legacy is enriched by the memories shared with his beloved children, Amanda Butera and Christopher Butera, and his siblings, Rose Marie Butera, Vincenzio Butera, and Charles Butera, who all precede him in death.
An avid fisherman, Duke found solace in the peaceful pursuit of angling and cherished every moment he spent with his family. He enjoyed a good beer and had a profound appreciation for music, which often served as the backdrop to gatherings filled with laughter and joy.
In honor of Duke’s life and to celebrate the warmth that he brought to everyone around him, a visitation will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals in Syracuse, NY, on June 25, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The family will continue to celebrate Duke's life into the evening at a place to be determined.
Duke will be deeply missed by all who knew him, yet his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched with his kindness and love.
