Listen to Obituary

Barbara Rushlo (Barnello), 81, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Barbara was born on February 8, 1945, in Syracuse, New York, to Helen (Shea) and Edward Barnello. She grew up in Baldwinsville and attended St. Lucy’s School. Throughout her life, Barbara worked hard and valued her independence. She worked for General Electric and later at Hills Department Store.

More than anything, Barbara’s life centered around her family. She was caring, nurturing, selfless, independent, and always able to bring humor to the people around her. She took great pride in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and treasured the time she spent with them. Her grandchildren knew her not only as their grandmother, but as a constant source of care and support throughout their lives. She loved a good movie, trips to the casino with her sisters, celebrating Christmas, and simply checking in on the people she loved. Staying connected to her family and knowing that everyone was okay was just part of who Barbara was.

Barbara is survived by her daughters, Deborah Stern and Shelley Alexander; Richard “Dick” Herbert, whom she loved as a son; her grandchildren, Tiffany Herbert, Katie Mercado and her husband, Erik, Jacob Downing and his wife, Makenzy, and Jacklynn Schmidt and her husband, Christian; and her beloved great-grandchildren, Kian, Lumen, Brooks, and Benjamin.

She is also survived by her siblings, Thomas Barnello and his wife, Cindy, Michael E. Barnello, Mary Anne Barnello Palmer, Donna Barnello Direnzo, and Catherine Barnello Viscomi.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Paul Rushlo; her infant son, Richard Rushlo; her parents, Helen and Edward Barnello; her brothers, David Barnello and Robert Barnello; and her son-in-law, Danny Stern.

Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of Barbara’s life at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, North Syracuse, on Monday, October 12, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a service to follow. Flowers are welcome.

Barbara will be remembered most for the love and care she gave so freely, the family she was so proud of, and the many ways she made sure the people she loved knew she was there.
