Christopher "Chris" L. Johnstone, a devoted family man, skilled mechanic, and proud veteran, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2026. Born on March 31, 1951, Chris dedicated his life to his work, his loved ones, and the vibrant community around him.
Chris’s journey in mechanics began early, starting work at just 16 years old in various car repair shops in Syracuse. He pursued his passion by studying auto mechanics at Central Tech in Syracuse, New York. In 1985, he took a courageous step to open his own auto repair shop, which he operated until 1989. Subsequently, he continued his career at Serio's Mobil in Cicero, NY. When the business moved to Central Square and was renamed Serio's and later Chauvaux Service Center, Chris remained a steadfast employee until his well-earned retirement in January 2026.
His professional life was complemented by dedicated military service. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1971, Chris served two years stationed at Fort Bliss in Texas as a motor pool mechanic. There, he skillfully maintained M60 Patton and M551 Sheridan tanks. After an honorable discharge in January 1973, he continued to serve in the Army reserves until January 1977. His commitment to country was marked by honor and unwavering resilience.
Chris’s heart and spirit shone brightest in his role as a father and husband. He was married to his beloved wife, Patricia Johnstone, for 52 years, a partnership founded on mutual respect, love, and enduring support. Chris was affectionately known as "Patti’s rock," the steady voice of reason and a man who always spoke with honesty and kindness. His family was his greatest joy, and he was often described as 100% the best father. His guidance, protection, and warmth extended beyond his immediate family, touching all who knew him.
Chris’s legacy lives on through his two sons, Brian C. Johnstone (and his wife Linda Copani) and Sean C. Johnstone. He was a proud grandfather to four grandchildren—two granddaughters, Audrey Blake and Julia Johnstone, and two grandsons, Christian and Ryan Johnstone. His family circle also includes his brothers Bruce Johnstone (married to Barbara) and Gregory Johnstone (married to Sandra), along with many cherished sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Throughout his life, Chris found great pleasure in the simple joys of fishing and boating, spending countless hours on his three boats tubing, waterskiing, and cruising the scenic Oneida River. A true car enthusiast, Chris’s love for automobiles was evident in his collection, fondly recalling his early favorites—a 1968 Corvette convertible, a 1961 Chevy Impala, and a 1970 Nova Super Sport. His passion inspired his sons to share in the appreciation of classic cars, further strengthening family bonds.
Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce E. and Elizabeth Johnstone, whose memories he treasured deeply.
Friends, family, and all who were fortunate to know Christopher “Chris” L. Johnstone will remember a man whose generosity, integrity, and zest for life enriched every moment. His presence will be profoundly missed, yet his spirit and love will endure in the hearts of his family and all who knew him.
