Cornelius A. O'Leary, a beloved figure known both for his vibrant personality and devoted service, passed away on May 14, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on February 13, 1935, Cornelius led a life marked by dedication, camaraderie, and a zest for living that touched everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Cornelius was widely recognized for his tenure at WFBL radio station, where he was affectionately known as "Corny O'Leary." His voice and presence left a lasting imprint on the station and its listeners. In addition to his esteemed career in broadcasting, Cornelius also made his mark as a commercial real estate broker, pursuing multiple professional endeavors with equal passion and integrity.
A proud veteran, Cornelius served his country with honor in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. His military service reflected a deep commitment to his nation, a commitment that remained an important part of his identity throughout his life.
Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, Cornelius was cherished for his gregarious nature. He was a man known for his captivating stories and infectious laughter, qualities that endeared him to family, friends, and acquaintances alike. He was not only a storyteller but a man who cherished community and connection.
Cornelius’s personal interests were rich and varied. He was an avid sailor who found joy and tranquility on the water, and he was also a passionate golfer, always welcoming a challenge and the fellowship that accompanies the game.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Martha O’Leary; his son, Cornelius M. O’Leary; two step-daughters, Kaitilin (Charles) Gilmer and Janelle (Jimmy) Gilmer; and his step-grandson, Mark Edward Gilmer.
Cornelius was preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius and Edna O’Leary, who undoubtedly helped shape the values and character he so proudly lived by.
A visitation will be held on May 22, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 705 N Main St., Syracuse, NY 13212. The funeral service will immediately follow, commencing at 7:00 PM. Military will be held at the conclusion of the service.
Cornelius A. O’Leary’s life was a testament to warmth, dedication, and the profound joy of human connection. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and remembered with great respect and affection. May his memory forever be a blessing to his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.
