Deborah Lynn Starr Poniatowski, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026 in Syracuse, New York, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Deborah was born on November 7, 1955, in Houston, Texas, to Lawrence (Larry) Arthur Starr and Sandra Sue Smith Starr. She attended public school and graduated from South Houston High School in 1975. That same year, on August 8, 1975, she married Jack E. Taber in Houston, Texas.
Deborah was preceded in death by her husband of 18 years, John Poniatowski.
She is survived by her generous and loving partner, Richard Scammell, who stood faithfully by her side through life’s many adventures. Deborah’s legacy lives on through her cherished children: Tammy Taber, Elizabeth Lauber and her husband Mitchell, and Timothy Taber. A proud and devoted grandmother, Deborah poured endless love into her grandchildren: Skyla Hays-Taber, Audrey Hays (partner Gregory De Leon), Jack “Tyler” King, Avery McIntosh, Reese Thaxton, and Liliane Lauber.
Deborah is also survived by her mother, Sandra Smith Starr; her sisters and brother, Dawn (Vince) Weaver, Doe Ann (Bernard) Lindsay, and David Starr (partner Rachel Wagner); her niece Briana (Case) Reinertsen and their children Summer and Gibson; and her nephew Bradlay (Samantha) Lindsay. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Allie.
Deborah moved through life with dedication to both her family and her work as a long-time employee of Wegmans. She demonstrated remarkable strength, determination, and integrity in all she pursued. A woman of deep love and selflessness, she was always ready to help anyone in need.
To Debbie, family was everything. She embodied the true essence of motherhood, devoting her life wholeheartedly to those she loved. She had a special appreciation for the finer things in life; her taste in fashion and décor was eclectic, elegant, and classy, blending luxury with a whimsical spirit. She enjoyed relaxing with a glass of wine and closely followed the traditions and stories of the Royal Family.
Deborah found her greatest joys in both the simple and the beautiful: sharing long dinners with family, taking peaceful walks, laughing at cute animal videos, and treasure-hunting while antiquing. A loving friend and a fierce advocate for those close to her, Deborah leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love, kindness, and grace.
