Edgar L. Appleton

June 16, 1930 — May 22, 2025

West Monroe

Edgar L. Appleton, 94, a lifelong resident of Syracuse and formerly of Cicero, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born to the late Robert and Edna (Schoen) Appleton, Edgar was a proud graduate of Syracuse-area schools and a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 70 years, Barbara Griep Appleton. Edgar and Barbara were inseparable in life, sharing a remarkable journey filled with love, faith, service, and family.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Edgar enlisted directly out of high school and served his country honorably. Following his military service, he enjoyed a long career with Western Electric and later AT&T, retiring in 1985 at the age of 55.

Edgar and Barbara made their home in the North Syracuse area, raising their three daughters there. They later lived in Cicero for more than two decades before Edgar moved to West Monroe, NY, to reside with his daughter Julie and son-in-law, Paul Rumo.

Devoted to service, Edgar and Barbara volunteered for North Syracuse Meals on Wheels for 22 years and were lifelong members of Luther Memorial Church, where Edgar faithfully served in various roles throughout the years. His deep commitment to his church community was a cornerstone of his life.

An avid golfer, Edgar was a longtime member of Arrowhead Golf Course and continued to enjoy the game well into his 80s. He was also a devoted New York Yankees fan and relished following the team throughout his retirement. Above all, Edgar cherished time spent with his family and friends, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.

In addition to his wife and parents, Edgar was predeceased by his brothers, Robert and Donald Appleton. He is survived by his daughters, Susan (Anthony) Morabito of Virginia, Cathy (James) Wise of California, and Julie (Paul) Rumo of West Monroe, NY. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Suzie, Kelly, Chrissie, Matthew, Zachary, Emily, Kenzie, Kenson, and Kenley; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Edgar’s memory may be made to Hospice of CNY, whose support and compassion were deeply appreciated.

A joint Celebration of Life for both Edgar and Barbara will be held at Luther Memorial Church in North Syracuse at a future date. Interment will follow in the church columbarium.

Edgar’s legacy of love, generosity, and quiet strength will live on through all who knew and loved him.
