Listen to Obituary

Brewerton, NY – Edward "Ed" James Van Buren, 87, of Brewerton, NY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, with his family by his side as he made his way to Heaven.

Ed was born on January 19, 1938 in Ballston Spa, NY. He graduated from Burnt Hills - Ballston Lake High School in 1956, where he met the love of his life, Frances (Fran) Witbeck. The two married in 1958 and shared 67 wonderful years together.

He loved to share stories of his youth with anyone willing to listen. He often spoke fondly of his mother, Jean, who did her best raising two boys, and of the foster homes and parents who shaped his early years. He worked as a soda jerk and delivered newspapers, proudly retracing his old paper route whenever he returned to eastern New York. He also served proudly in the Air National Guard.

Ed began his career with Niagara Mohawk, living in Schenectady while he and Fran welcomed their first two daughters. Later, they moved to Central New York, where their third daughter was born. He dedicated 35 years to Niagara Mohawk before retiring early in 1993 to spend more time with his family, traveling and enjoying warm winters in the southern states.

A man of many passions, Ed cherished the outdoors camping, hunting, fishing, and tending his yard with his beloved tractor. He delighted in singing and dancing with Fran, whether round or square dancing. Known for his striking blue eyes, soft skin, and warm smile, Ed was also admired for his meticulous nature and steadfast persistence. He approached life with focus and clarity, always thinking deeply and carefully analyzing every detail. He loved cooking and savoring good food, especially seafood and pies, and he treasured every moment spent with family and friends. One of his favorite sayings, “Live a good life and good things will happen,” remains a lasting reminder of his outlook on life.

Ed was a devoted member of Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church and Brewerton United Methodist Church throughout most of his years.

He is predeceased by his parents, Jean and Charles Van Buren; and his granddaughter, Jessica Allen. He is survived by his wife, Fran Van Buren; his brother, Charles Van Buren; his three daughters and their spouses, Cathy and Dave Voorhees, Tammy and Craig Allen, and Pamela and Tom Ingersoll; nine grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren, all of whom brought endless joy and smiles to his life.
