Helen M Holtz, 86, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, at Francis House, with her loving daughter by her side.
Born in Syracuse, NY, on March 7, 1939, Helen was the daughter of the late Alfred and Martha Gruner. In her early years, she devoted herself to raising her children, always deeply involved in their lives and activities. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and welcome, whether for her children or the many friends who found comfort at her table. Helen had a way of making everyone feel at home, often greeting guests with fresh coffee, snacks, and her trademark hospitality, always ready to “throw a couple pizzas in the oven” for whoever walked through the door.
When her children were grown, Helen worked as a bookkeeper at Longley Jones, where she formed lasting friendships with colleagues and clients alike. She remained there for many years before retiring, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and camaraderie.
Helen was a selfless soul, easygoing, joyful, and content with the simplest things. She never sought much for herself, preferring to ensure the happiness of those around her. Even in her final years, despite health challenges and pain, she never complained. Instead, she continued to give what she could, doing her best to brighten the lives of others.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son-in-law, Patrick LaMacchia, whom she cherished for the care and love he gave to her daughter.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Holtz) LaMacchia, with whom she shared a home for the last 20 years; her son, Chuck Holtz, and his wife, Lynn; her sister and brother-in-law, Patty and Raymond Symer, with whom she shared a close bond; several grandchildren; and an extended family of nieces, nephews, and countless “honorary” family members whose lives she touched with her generosity and love.
Helen will be forever missed. Her kindness, warmth, and spirit of hospitality will live on in all who knew her. In her honor, we will carry forward her tradition of making everyone feel welcome, and we will always put on a fresh pot of coffee in her memory.
There will be no services.
