James Bates, a lifelong union mason, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on September 19, 1940, James was known for his unwavering commitment to his craft and his deep love for his family. Throughout his life, he shared his humor and laughter with those around him, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
James cherished many memories, particularly the times spent in the Poconos watching NASCAR races with his sons. These moments, filled with joy and camaraderie, were a testament to his profound love for both his family and the thrilling world of racing. Fondly remembered for his funny personality, James not only loved to laugh, but he also had a passion for poker, further adding to the warmth and fun of family gatherings.
He is survived by his three sons, James (Lisa) Bates, Michael (Erin) Bates, and Robert (Lacey) Bates. James also leaves behind his stepchildren, Dawn (Jim) Kemp, Randi (Chris) Jessop, Melissa (Angel) Kreiner, and Kimberly (Tom) Walters, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who adored him. Additionally, he is remembered by his brothers, Richard Bates and Paul Billings, as well as several nieces and nephews who will carry forward his spirit of kindness and joy.
James was predeceased by his beloved wife, Martha Bates, to whom he was married for 32 years, along with his brothers Bobby, Roy, and Buck Bates, and his sister Patricia Fedrizzi.
A visitation for James Bates will be held on December 20, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at New Comer Cremations & Funerals located at 705 N Main St, Syracuse, NY. Following the visitation, a funeral service will take place from 6:00 PM at the same location.
James Bates will be remembered as an all-around good man whose loving nature and vibrant spirit touched the lives of many. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.
