James L. Blackburn Sr., 86, of Brewerton, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026.
James was born in Mexico, New York, on April 19, 1939, to George and Evelyn Blackburn. He worked alongside his father at George L. Blackburn Plumbing, Heating and Excavating before purchasing the business in 1995. James proudly operated the business with his wife, Linda, until their retirement in 2004. A Master Plumber for 50 years, James was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to his craft.
James enlisted with the 174th New York Air National Guard and was deployed to Clovis New Mexico in 1968, where he served as an airplane mechanic. During his service, he met his lifelong best friend, Nick Rizzo.
For over 40 years, James served his community as a volunteer Driver, EMT & Director for SOVAC Ambulance. He also worked as a driver for Brewerton Ambulance.
In his free time, James enjoyed camping, building projects, gardening, bird watching, cheering on the New York Yankees and Syracuse University sports, spending time with his children and grandchildren, helping his oldest grandson with his business, and playing Bingo.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Linda Blackburn; his parents, George L. Blackburn Sr. and Evelyn Blackburn Clemens; and his brothers, William Blackburn and George L. Blackburn Jr.
He is survived by his brother, Richard Blackburn, his children, James L. (Lora) Blackburn Jr. and Sarah Blackburn (Robert) Stacy; grandchildren, James L. (Kathleen) Blackburn III, Alexander (Darianne) Stacy, and Richard (Colin Bolivar) Blackburn; and great-grandchildren, Anna C. Blackburn and Lily M. Blackburn.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 from 5-7PM at New Comer Cremations and Funerals. A funeral service will be held the following morning at 10AM at New Comer. The burial will follow at Pine Plains Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Brewerton Ambulance and Francis House, Syracuse.
