James Mistretta passed away on January 6, 2026 at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, NY after a lengthy illness. James was born in Fulton, NY on October 14, 1945. He graduated from Oswego Catholic High School and SUNY Oswego with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. James taught English in both Fulton High School in Fulton, NY and Nottingham High School in the Syracuse City School District.
James was predeceased by his parents, Sebastian and Edna Mistretta and a sister, Ann Marie Mistretta. In addition, Jim was predeceased by his aunts and uncles whose love and support he greatly valued, Antoinette and Joseph Pappalardo, Paul and Josephine Belfiore, Santina and James Ferlito and Grace and John Zagame.
Surviving is his brother, Anthony J. Mistretta (Pamela) of Albany, NY; sister, Linda Mistretta of Syracuse, NY; niece Jennifer Hampston (Edward) of Albany, NY; nephew, David Mistretta (Devra) of Goshen, NY; many cousins whose friendship and love were greatly valued and his best friend, Steve Wilkins of Rochester, NY with whom he spent many hours watching his favorite teams, the New York Yankees, the New York Giants and the Syracuse University Football and Basketball teams.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am on Thursday, June 4, 2026 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 309 Buffalo Street, Fulton, NY 13069. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fulton, NY. The family requests that any contributions be made to the charity of your choice.
