James Earl Slater

August 4, 1954 — July 21, 2024

James Earl Slater, 69, of Marcellus, passed away on July 21, 2024. Born to Thomas and Lucille Slater on August 4, 1954, Jim was the fifth of eight children. He was a graduate of Most Holy Rosary High School and spent over twenty years working for Syracuse University. Jim was an ardent reader, spending many hours at local libraries; He passed along his love of reading to his children and his granddaughter. Jim was known for his dry sense of humor and always putting others first.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas F. Slater; his mother, Lucille Springstead Slater; and sisters, Patricia Bradford and “Aunt Pretty Joan” Slater Cowburn.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Alison; son, Zachary (Elizabeth); granddaughter, Isla; siblings, Thomas, Barbara, Richard (Ellen), Michael (Nikki), and Edward (Jan); and a large extended family.

Calling hours will be held Friday, July 26, 2024 from 4-6PM at New Comer Cremations and Funerals, where funeral service will follow at 6PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Food Bank of Central New York.

While Jim excelled at social distancing, his kindness and humor touched the hearts of all who knew him.
