James F. Whitney, Jr.

James F. Whitney, Jr. of North Syracuse passed away unexpectedly on September 22, 2026, at the age of 91. Born in Syracuse on April 16, 1935, James lived a life marked by service, hard work, humor, and a deep appreciation for the community around him.

He graduated from Onondaga Central and, in his teenage years, worked as a caddy at LaFayette Country Club. He later joined the United States Navy, serving for eight years, a chapter of his life of which he was very proud. After his military service, James worked for Carrier Corp. for many years. He also worked for Brinks as a security guard and driver before retiring. Later, he moved to Las Vegas, where he continued working in security departments at many casinos.

James was known as a jokester, someone who brought laughter to those around him. He enjoyed playing cards, especially Poker and Pitch, and he loved local history. One of the accomplishments that meant the most to him was placing United States flags on the military headstones in North Syracuse Cemetery and other local cemeteries, a quiet and meaningful tribute to those who served.

He is survived by his companion, Rose McCarthy. He is also survived by his sisters, Pam (David) Worlock, Judi (Larry)Taylor, Bonnie Gedney, and Penny (Larry) Gessini, and by his brother, Dan (Cyndy) Whitney. Together, they shared the enduring bond of his close family and the many memories that come with a lifetime of love, laughter, and connection.

James was preceded in death by his sister Debbie Gerard, his brother Gerald Whitney, and his sister Diane Whitney. Their memories remained part of his life and story, and they are remembered with him now.

Visitation will be held on Monday September 28, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 705 N Main St, Syracuse, NY 13212. A funeral service will follow there at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at Our Lady of Peace Family. Donations may be made to the VA Medical Center, 800 Irving Ave., Syracuse.

James will be remembered for his proud service to his country, his dedication throughout the years, his playful spirit, and the care he showed in honoring others. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved him.
