Joan (Carpenter) Scott passed away on April 27, 2025, at the age of 103, in Chittenango.

She was the only child of Helen Robbins Carpenter and Henry Baton Carpenter, who was the founder of Carpenter and Hughes Opticians in Syracuse. She graduated from the Goodyear Burlingame School and Syracuse University. During World War II, she was a plane spotter and volunteered at Memorial Hospital.

She was a member of DeWitt Community Church and, a member of the church’s Women’s Association Naomi Circle, and a founder of the church Thrift Shop. She was a board member of Planned Parenthood and the YWCA, as well as a member of the Junior League and the Monday book club. She volunteered at the Fayetteville Library. She was a keen bridge player and a watercolor painter. She loved reading, sewing, knitting, gardening, and bird watching.

She is survived by her daughter, Amy Carpenter Scott of East Syracuse; her grandchildren, Jennifer Scott Christie (George) of Camillus, Andrew Baton Scott (Maeve) of Springfield, Virginia and Emily Scott Surette (Matthew) of Rowley, Massachusetts, as well as her great-grandchildren, Connor George Christie of Camillus, Meghan Kathryn Christie of Slingerlands, Jack Henry Scott of Springfield, Virginia and Elaina Marie Surette of Rowley, Massachusetts.

She is predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Walter Hawley Scott Jr., and her sons, Walter Hawley Scott III (Katie) and Henry Baton Scott (Laura).

There will be no calling hours and a private burial at the convenience of the family at Oakwood Cemetery.
