Joseph L. Chovan, 88, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on September 30, 2025.
He was born to the late Joseph and Mary Chovan on August 10, 1937, in Monessen, PA.
Joe was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, earning a BS in Electrical Engineering.
He worked for General Electric in Lynn, MA, and Schenectady, NY, before moving to Syracuse and marrying Edna Cecile Valloze in 1965. Together they raised two children, Joe and Cherie. His cherished family was everything to Joe-- always a devoted husband and loving father.
Joe enjoyed his highly technical work and earned numerous patents for his inventions over his 45-year career with GE and Lockheed Martin.
He also enjoyed playing chess, table tennis, woodworking, and watching classic films with Edna. He was an avid Pirates and Steelers fan.
Joe is predeceased by his parents, his wife, and his brothers Edward and Gerald.
Joe is survived by his children, Joe (Mary) Chovan of Cazenovia, and Cherie (Dominic and his brother, Ger) Decicco, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
His wisdom, wit, laugh, insightful and caring nature will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 6, 2025, at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 705 N. Main St., Syracuse, NY 13212, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Margaret's Church, 200 Roxboro Rd, Mattydale, NY 13211, at 1 pm, with a burial in North Syracuse Cemetery immediately following.
