Katherine “Kate” Bailey, born April 29, 1970, passed away unexpectedly on August 14, 2026, surrounded by the people who loved her most—her family and lifelong friends.
Kate was a truly remarkable person with a heart that seemed to have no limits. She had a special love for animals, and whether it was a dog, a cat, a bird, or even an alligator, Kate somehow always managed to convince her husband, Paul, that there was room for just one more. Her love for animals was a reflection of who she was as a person—compassionate, patient, and unable to turn away from something or someone who needed to be cared for.
But Kate’s compassion did not stop with animals. She had an extraordinary empathy for people and a rare ability to see beyond what someone was showing on the outside. She could sense when someone was hurting, when someone needed a little extra love, or when someone simply needed somebody to be there. Kate was the kind of person you could call when you didn’t know where else to turn. She listened without judgment, loved without conditions, and gave more of herself than she ever asked for in return. If Kate loved you, you never had to wonder—you felt it.
Kate was incredibly fortunate to meet her soulmate at a young age. She and Paul spent more than 39 years building a life together, growing together, and sharing the ordinary moments that, over time, became a lifetime of memories. Their relationship was filled with love, laughter, challenges, adventures, and the kind of companionship that comes from truly knowing someone and choosing them again and again.
Kate cherished the life she and Paul created together. From raising their family to filling their home with animals, their lives were intertwined in countless ways. Paul was not simply her husband; he was her best friend, her partner, and the person who stood beside her through more than four decades of life. Their love was a beautiful part of who Kate was, and the life they shared will always be one of her greatest legacies.
Although Kate gave birth to only one child, motherhood was something she shared with far more people than her own son. During her years living on the West Side of Syracuse, Kate opened both her home and her heart to children who needed someone to love them, care for them, and simply be there. She helped raise many of her nieces and nephews, including Jason “Jay Jay,” Sharon, Britt, Sam, Michael, Hailey, Alex, and many others.
For Kate, family was never defined solely by blood. She had a way of making people feel that they belonged. She didn't need to be called “Mom” to become one. She loved these children, worried about them, cared for them, celebrated their accomplishments, and stood beside them through difficult times. In so many lives, Kate became the person they could count on—the person who would answer the phone, open the door, and make sure they were okay.
One of Kate’s greatest joys in life was becoming a grandmother to her grandson, CJ. She absolutely adored him and cherished the role of being his grandma. The love she had for him was unmistakable, and being able to watch him grow was a gift she treasured deeply.
Kate also had a love for the little things that made her happy. She loved painting her nails and, naturally, had a giant nail stamper to make sure she could do them just the way she liked. It was such a Kate thing—something simple that brought her joy and made her smile.
Kate is survived by her husband of more than 39 years, Paul Bailey, her son, Christopher (April) Bailey, her beloved grandson, Christopher Junior, her brother, Frank, her sister, Katherine (Michael), her brother, Mark (Mary), her adopted son Anthony, Adopted daughter Brittany, her adopted grand daughter Raelynn, and an abundance of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, as well as countless friends and loved ones whose lives were made better simply because Kate was in them.
CELEBRATION OF LIFE: Kate never wanted a funeral. She did not want her loved ones to spend their time mourning her or remembering her through sadness. She wanted to be celebrated—to have people come together, share stories, laugh about the memories that made her who she was, and remember all of the love and happiness she brought into their lives. In keeping with Kate’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at Kate’s favorite fishing spot where she annually fished with her family. The celebration of life will take place at The Lodge at Van Buren Park on August 30, 2026. Family and friends are invited to come together to celebrate Kate’s life, share memories, tell stories, and honor the incredible person she was. Details on exact hours are to follow.
