Loretta "Lori" J. Mahar, a beloved matriarch and cherished family member, passed away on December 5, 2025, in Syracuse, NY, at the age of 81. Born on November 21, 1944, in Raton, New Mexico, Lori was a source of strength and kindness, throughout all stages of her life.
Known for her selfless nature, Lori was always there to lend a hand or an ear to those in need. As a devoted mother, grandmother and sibling, she embraced the role of unofficial counselor within her family and circle of friends. She had a caring spirit, always putting others before herself, earning her the reputation of being like a mother to her siblings.
Lori spent many weekends camping during the summer when her children were young. She and her husband, Thomas H. Mahar, journeyed across the country in their RV for eight years, often serving as campground hosts, demonstrating their love for travel while stopping to spend quality time with family along the way. Lori’s family was her pride and joy, and she was a proud mother to her three daughters: Doreen (Bryant) Wilson, Michele (Matt) Mahar, and Teri (Johnny) Foster, as well as her son, Thomas A. (Kelly) Mahar.
Her creativity flourished in her hobbies, as she was very crafty and dedicated much of her time to crocheting blankets and hats for family members and friends.
Lori is survived by her husband of 61 years, Thomas H. Mahar, her four children, Doreen (Bryant) Wilson, Michele (Matt) Mahar, Teri (Johnny) Foster, and Thomas A. (Kelly) Mahar; eight grandchildren, Nick DeSilvio, Dylan DeSilvio, Stephen (Ashley ) Heffron, Tyler Mahar, Christina (Charlie ) Heffron, Allison Mahar, Justin (Devin) Hockey and Jamie Hockey; three great grandchildren, Chandler DeSilvio, Eloise Heffron and Miles Heffron; sister, Cimmie (Fred) Neadle; brothers, Rick (Cindy) Scheuer, John (Denise) Scheuer, and Fred (Maria) Scheuer; sister-in-law, Anne Marie Drury; and her beloved cat, Cece.
Lori was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Simodosea Scheuer; and her two brothers, Gary Scheuer and Bob Scheuer.
Calling hours will be held on December 9, 2025, from 4-7PM at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 705 N Main St, Syracuse, NY 13212. A Mass will be celebrated in her honor on December 10, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Blessed Sacrament Church, 3217 James Street, Syracuse, NY 13206.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to, St Jude Children's Hospital.
Lori J. Mahar will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her warm heart and vibrant spirit. Her legacy will continue to resonate through the lives she touched with her grace and generosity.
