Marcelle Seubert, of Cicero, NY passed away on April 30, 2025, at the age of 100. Born Marcelle Therese Michaud in Quebec City, Canada on December 11, 1924 to Adjutor and Armandine Michaud, she was the sixth out of twelve children.
Marcelle was a very gifted athlete, and growing up in such a large family, she acquired a competitive spirit. She loved to compete with her siblings in many outdoor sports, excelling in tennis, ice-skating, snow and water skiing. They were a very close-knit family that enjoyed their time together.
She also had an affinity for music and was an excellent piano player, something that would continue throughout her entire life.
Growing up, Marcelle was known to be a prankster and always tried to get a laugh out of everybody. There are many stories of a young Marcelle playing practical jokes on unsuspecting victims! From a young age, Marcelle was also fascinated with Shirley Temple movies and became an avid collector of her memorabilia.
After graduating from high School, Marcelle worked at the Canadian Parliament as a stenographer.
As a young Canadian, one of Marcelle’s goals was to learn the English language. Any chance she had, she would practice. In her mid-twenties, there was a chance meeting on a street corner with two young men who travelled up from Syracuse to attend a wedding. One of those being a young German boy named, Hans Seubert, whom she ended up marrying just 1 year later in 1953. In doing so, Marcelle made the daunting move away from the comforts of her home and family in Quebec to a tiny apartment in Syracuse… barely being able to speak English and not knowing anybody… now was her chance to learn! Making a move like that truly speaks to her strength in character.
From there Marcelle and Hans started a family… Something that became the cornerstone of her life; there was nothing more important to her than family, which ultimately consisted of 5 children, 9 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. Marcelle balanced being a great homemaker with many years working at Sears… first in the credit department, then in sales, retiring in 1987 after 20 years.
Marcelle was a fantastic cook… the family would look forward to her holiday baking and cooking (Christmas meat pies a family favorite) or just spaghetti dinners on Sundays after church. It brought the family together, and that was so important to her. She also perfected many German dishes such as Rouladen and Sauerbraten. Marcelle was also a lover of any dark chocolate. Her final years especially revolved around dark chocolate! She would always make sure to offer some to any visitor.
Marcelle kept socially active throughout her long life and made the most of all the ups and downs that life has to offer. After Hans passed in 1994, she enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren, which kept her young, teaching piano to her grandkids and neighborhood kids, red wine and happy hours with her neighbors. She also enjoyed playing Bunco with her daughters and friends. She kept herself very busy right into her mid-nineties. That was a blessing.
Marcelle was the epitome of being a great wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She took her Catholic faith seriously and was involved in many activities at Sacred Heart Church. She was a firm believer in the power of positive thinking. She loved to laugh and was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. There was a sweetness about her that was infectious, and you couldn’t help but to laugh with her as she spoke in her Canadian accent and mispronounced many English words!
Marcelle is preceded in death by her husband, Hans Seubert, and her son Michael Seubert. She was also preceded by her siblings: Roland, Armand, Jeannette Laplante, Madeleine Morel, Laurent, Gilberte Gagnon, Robert, Jacqueline, Lucille, Gaston, and Jean-Guy.
Marcelle is survived by her children: daughter, Michelle (Michael Brown) DeJohn; son, Rick Seubert; daughter, Monique (J) Yanchisin; and son, Eric (Kristine) Seubert; grandchildren: Kim, Michael, Jessica, Eric, Nicole, Nicholas, Alex, Jake, and Chris, as well as nine great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by her brother-in-law, Richard Seubert and many nieces and nephews in the United States and Canada.
