West Monroe

Marlene L. Payne, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, known for her nurturing personality, passed away on July 13, 2025, in Syracuse, NY. Born on May 27, 1945, in Toronto, Canada, Marlene filled her life with purpose and service, working various jobs from the age of 16, retiring as a medical secretary at St. Joseph's Dialysis Unit. In 1989, Marlene became a proud U.S. citizen.

Throughout her life, she was not only recognized for her professional contributions but also the serene atmosphere she created through her hobbies. An avid journaler and mediator, she often found solace in "her happy place" at Willow Bay, where she enjoyed the tranquility of nature and spent peaceful moments observing birds and dragonflies. Her passion for the outdoors and spirituality was a testament to her ability to find joy in life’s simple pleasures.

Marlene is survived by her children, Sonja Vigneux, Deborah Vigneux Killian, and Robert (Angela) Vigneux; her grandchildren, Dakota Killian, Kayden Vigneux and Malyssa Payne; her sisters, Lynne (Dale) Jones and Cathy (Brian) Krease; her aunt, Karol (David) Avnet; her brother-in-law, Fred (Judy) Vigneux; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her late husband's, Robert Joseph Donald Leslie Vigneux and Albert Zander Payne; as well as her parents, William and Margaret Stone Ermel; and her stepson, Darrel Payne.

Marlene L. Payne will be remembered not only for her kindness and strength but also for the legacy she leaves behind in both her family and the lives she touched throughout her journey. In keeping with her wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in her favorite place, Willow Bay. Contributions may be made in her memory to Francis House or Upstate Hematology Oncology.
