Martin William Coon, age 75, of Canastota (formerly of Syracuse), passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.

Martin was born July 30, 1950 to William and Alice (Dygert) Coon in Syracuse, N.Y. He was a lifelong resident of the Syracuse/Lakeport area and later moved to Lakeport, NY during his retirement years.

He shared 50 years of marriage to his beloved Valerie Joan (Thomas) Coon. Together they enjoyed camping and spending time with family and friends.

Martin spent 37 years with the City of Syracuse Public Works. He retired from the Water Works Department.

Martin was passionate about drumming. He spent many years in various bands playing throughout Central N.Y. He was a member of Red Rock, Lake Effect Blues Band, Gnarlys, to mention a few.

Martin is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Valerie Joan (Thomas) Coon; his children, Tina E. Thomas-Lynch (Ronald), Martin E. Coon, Suzanne A. Parsons (Richard Bennett), Valerie S. Madison (Dale), Tiffany S. Lopez (Raul), Tara E. Smith, John W. Parsons, and Phyllis V. Parsons; 24 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and his sister Kathleen Shafer (Bruce).

He was predeceased by his son Gary D. Thomas (Michelle) and his parents, William and Alice Coon; siblings, Mark Coon, William Robert Coon, and Thomas Coon.

Calling hours are Friday from 2-4pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, North Syracuse, NY.
