It may be common to say that someone’s story has ended when their life is over, but that cannot be true when their influence has taken root in the hearts of their family, as in the case of Nina K. Bette (August 1948-May 2026).
Born in Belgium to Ukrainian parents and raised in the United States, Nina’s life began in a way that was uniquely her own. She was the eldest of three children expected to achieve the American dream while still upholding the old family values. It was this pressure that developed her signature wit, drove her to earn a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from SUNY Albany, and established her as a warm and constant presence in the lives of her family and friends.
Nina was a prolific reader and writer, though she maintained that a truly good story did not need to be well-written. She saw this as a metaphor for life, and it inspired her to extend grace to the people she cared for – the people to whom she showed unending support, shared a first-rate sense of humor, and sent unforgettable birthday cards. She was really good at sending birthday cards.
Nina is survived by her brother Anthony, her married nieces and nephew, Nicki, Christine, and Eric, their respective spouses Erin, Anthony, and Maya, and her grandnephews Olivander and Sora. But Nina would most like you to know that her other two nieces, Jessamine and Amanda, are single – just in case you have any young men in your family who happen to be doctors. She would not be asking to be nosy. Just always, always trying to help.
