Richard "Rich" M. Hernandez, born on September 29, 1944, in Syracuse, NY, has departed from this world, slipping away quietly on July 23, 2025. A multifaceted man, Rich was not only a stalwart in the realm of commercial plumbing sales but also a beloved scout leader whose warmth and generosity of spirit left an indelible mark on the lives of countless children.
From a young age, Rich embraced life with enthusiasm and a playful spirit. His career in plumbing sales was marked by skill and dedication, but it was his genuine love for people, especially children, that made him truly remarkable. Known for his sarcastic wit and down-to-earth nature, Rich possessed a unique ability to blend professionalism with approachability, warming hearts while keeping the tone light-hearted.
Beyond the confines of his career, Rich enjoyed the outdoors. His passion for golfing, camping at Hejamada, and fishing on Oneida Lake reflected his deep appreciation for nature's serene embrace. Those who had the pleasure of spending time with him cherished stories of laughter-filled camping trips and competitive golf rounds, where friendly banter was the order of the day.
Rich was also an avid reader. Some of his favorite authors included Stewart Woods, David Baldacci, Sue Grafton, and James Patterson.
Rich adored his pets, particularly dogs, and approached every day with a joyful heart, never taking himself too seriously. His captivating personality and playful sarcasm drew people in, and once connected, they knew they had a loyal friend for life.
Rich is succeeded by his loving family: his children, Laurie (Joe) Zmudzinski, Rick (Stacy) Hernandez II, and Austin (Meghan) Hernandez, alongside his cherished grandchildren, Adam, Luke, Leah, Jack, and Finn, who were the bright lights of his life. His siblings, John, Mary, and Jim, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, who will carry his memory in their hearts.
Rich is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Agapito and Mary Hernandez, who welcomed him into the world and shaped the man he became.
Those who wish to pay their respects to Rich can do so during the visitation set to take place at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 705 N Main St, Syracuse, NY 13212, on July 31, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a Sharing of Memories to follow.
In a world that often seems hurried, Rich Hernandez was a gentle reminder of the beauty found in simple joys—be it a sunny day on the golf course, the laughter of children, the peace of nature, or the loving wag of a dog's tail. He will be missed more than words can convey, yet his spirit will continue to inspire those who were privileged to call him friend, father, and grandfather.
