Robert M. Richards, Jr.

Robert M. Richards, Jr., aged 74, of North Syracuse, New York, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2026. Born on August 19, 1951, in Syracuse, he was the beloved son of Robert and Sarah Richards.

Robert dedicated much of his life to serving the community. He retired from the United States Post Office, where he worked as a Letter Carrier, diligently delivering mail and connecting neighbors. His love for service extended beyond his postal career, as he also served in the U.S. Army Reserve for 28 years. He previously retired from the City of Syracuse Fire Department.

Known affectionately as "Coach Bob," Robert was deeply involved in youth sports, generously coaching for the Salt City Little League. His passion for sports was reflected not only in his coaching but also in his creative talents—he enjoyed designing T-shirts and crafting trophies related to his favorite teams and sporting events. His enthusiasm for baseball was evident in his avid support of the New York Yankees, and he particularly cherished the moments spent watching his grandson Kobe play the game he loved.

Robert’s commitment to family and friendship was a defining aspect of his life. He is survived by his devoted wife of 26 years, Rosemarie (Hanavan) Richards; his two daughters, Sara Richards and Kimberly Richards; and his treasured grandson, Kobe Stenson. He also leaves behind his brother, Daniel (Domenica) Crough; and two brothers-in-law, James Hanavan and Patrick Hanavan, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss his warm presence.  He is also survived by his beloved Labs, Sadie and Griffey.  

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Sarah J. and Robert Richards Sr., and by his sister Janet Plants and brother-in-law Owen (Tiny) Hanavan.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects and celebrate Robert’s life on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 705 N. Main Street, North Syracuse. A Funeral Service will be held at 7:00 pm that evening.

Robert’s life of dedication, kindness, and spirited enthusiasm leaves a lasting legacy. His family invites those who knew him to share memories and special messages to honor his memory during this time of mourning.
