Rodney James Sutherland, born on October 18, 1990, in North Glen, CO, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, at Upstate Hospital, surrounded by his loving family and friends. His departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him, yet his memory shines brightly, filled with laughter, love, and cherished accomplishments.
Rodney was a man of many talents and passions. He attended East Syracuse Minoa, graduating in 2009, where he built foundations that would carry him through life. His career was marked by dedication and hard work, most notably with J & R Landscaping for many years and more recently at US Vets Exterior Cleaning. Yet, beyond his professional life, Rodney's spirit truly came alive in the moments that made him laugh and connect with others.
Those who knew Rodney remember him as very funny, smart, and an unapologetic jokester. His witty humor brought light to any room, and his quick mind was always ready to engage. A devoted sports enthusiast, basketball held a special place in Rodney’s heart. Among his favorite memories was winning a CYO championship alongside his teammates and friends, and sharing the joy of those victories with two beloved great uncles, Rich and Roy. His competitive spirit also shone bright in bowling, where he proudly achieved many perfect "300" games, attesting to his skill and dedication.
But perhaps Rodney’s proudest accomplishments were deeply personal: becoming a father to his cherished son, Arthur Sutherland, and lovingly helping raise his stepson, Aiden Morey. These roles framed the essence of his life’s purpose and joy, as he nurtured and supported the next generation with unwavering devotion.
Like in his life, Rodney was always willing to help others. Per his wishes Rodney donated several organs so that others could live on.
Rodney is survived by his beloved son, Arthur Sutherland; stepson, Aiden Morey; his mother Kim Candela (Richard Mussi), his father Joseph Candela, Jr.; sister Jessica Sutherland; brother Connor Candela; along with extended family members who held him dearly — uncles Scott (Daralyn) Gratien and Brian (Leah) Gratien; aunt Laurie (Andrew) Vitello; maternal grandmother Barbara Miles; maternal grandfather James Gratien; paternal grandparents Joseph (Carol) Candela Sr.; niece Aaliyah Hemphill; nephew Luca Ames; and seven cousins: Adam, Allison, Audrey, Brianna, Olivia, Caleb, and Jacob, each of whom carry a piece of his spirit forward.
He was predeceased by his biological father, Rodney Sutherland, and grandmother, Joy Raha, whose memories remain a heartfelt part of his story.
Family, friends, and all who were touched by Rodney’s life are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of his journey. Visitation will be held on May 28, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 705 N Main St, Syracuse, NY 13212. This will be followed immediately by a memorial service from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM, offering a poignant opportunity for reflection and tribute. Following the services there will be a gathering at North Syracuse Fire Dept., 109 Chestnut St., North Syracuse.
Rodney James Sutherland lived a life filled with joy, humor, and love. Though his time with us was far too brief, the impact he made and the memories he created will resonate deeply. His laughter, his kindness, and his competitive spirit remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him. Rest peacefully, Rodney, knowing you were deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
