Ruth Mae Polley, born on June 30, 1940, left this world on January 28, 2026, surrounded by the love she nurtured throughout her life. She was a shining star, illuminating the lives of those around her with her caring nature and generous spirit.
Ruth dedicated her life to her family, creating a warm, loving home. is survived by her beloved spouse of 45 years, Steven Polley, who stood by her side through life’s many journeys. Ruth’s family extended to include her loving dog, Fluffy; her cherished daughter, Holly (Rich) Byrne, as well as two sons, Jason Hanus and Donald Jordan. She was a proud sister to Betty Jean (Bill) Maxam, and an esteemed aunt to her nephew, Michael Maxam. Ruth’s legacy also lives on through her two grandsons, Richie (Jen) Byrne and Ryan (Rochelle) Byrne. One loving granddaughter, Tosha Byrne; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter, each of whom brought immense joy to her life.
Ruth was known for her big heart and selflessness; she often would give the socks off her feet to those in need. Her kindness was complemented by a spirited personality—she loved shopping and cherished her comfortable pajamas. Time spent with family, especially her grandchildren, brought her unparalleled happiness.
A passionate gardener, Ruth enjoyed feeding the birds that frequented her garden, and she found joy in the simple pleasures of her surroundings, such as her collection of dream catchers and garden gnomes. Trips to Old Forge held a special place in her heart, where she created lasting memories that she treasured.
Ruth’s devotion shone brightest in her care for her son Joe for 28 years, a testament to her unwavering love and dedication as a mother. She will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing her.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Royal and Elizabeth Reynolds, along with her dear daughter, Poppy (Bob) Husted, her son, Joseph Hanus, and her grandson, Justin Hanus. Their memories are cherished, and she remains in the hearts of those she left behind.
Family and friends will gather to honor Ruth’s remarkable life at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 705 N Main St, Syracuse, NY 13212. Visitation will take place on February 8, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 4:00 PM.
As we bid farewell to a beloved matriarch, we celebrate the beautiful legacy she has left behind, forever etched in the hearts of her family and friends.
