Varughese Joseph Puthuparampil, 91, of Syracuse, NY, passed away on Saturday February 28, 2026 surrounded by his loving family after prayer. Varughese was born in Kerala, India on April 20, 1934 to the late Joseph Joseph and late Mariamma Joseph. He is one of four children: late Mariamma Joseph, late P.J. Joseph, and Rev. John Joseph Puthuparampil.
He was a strong believer in hard work, a trait demonstrated by his humble beginnings as a tailor in India. After he moved to the United States, he continued his work at Learbury Clothes for 10 years before he retired.
He had a strong faith and was an active member of the St Thomas Evangelical Church of India, Kaviyoor. He was active in the church and was a Sunday school teacher, a role that he took seriously. Even after moving to the United States, he participated in prayer meetings and attended regular Sunday church service. He loved hymns and often could be heard singing them in both Malayalam and English.
He cherished family and valued the time he spent with them. Whether it be watching televised basketball games and wrestling matches with his children or going out to eat burgers with his grandchildren, his happiest times were surrounded by family.
Varughese was predeceased by his wife Aleyamma Varughese.
He is survived by his children, Mathew (Aleyamma) Puthuparampil, Lilly (Mathew) Zachariah, Rajan (Jollyamma) Puthuparampil, and Molly (John) Pulimoottil. He had eleven grandchildren, including: Susan (Anish) Puthuparampil, Bobby (Stephanie) Zachariah, Sonia (Kuriakose) Puthuparampil, Benjamin (Sharon) Zachariah, Julia (Tony) Pulimoottil, Bindya Zachariah, Rinsey (Kalton) Furtal, Justin Puthuparampil, Jody (Michael) Pulimoottil, Jobin Puthuparampil, and Janet Pulimoottil. He also had 4 great grandchildren: Emily, Olivia, Leah and Maya.
Though his wisdom, compassion, and laughter will be missed, we take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace and in the loving presence of the Lord.
Visitation will be held on Friday March 13, 2026 from 5-7pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 705 N. Main St., N. Syracuse. A funeral service will be held on Saturday March 14th at 10am at the Liverpool United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Cemetery.
