William G. Hooper, Jr passed away peacefully March 4, 2026.
Born 10/21/1946 to William Hooper, Sr and Anita(Lynch) Hooper. He was a 1964 graduate of Assumption High School and attended MVCC. Bill was an Air National Guard member for six years.
Known affectionately as “Billy”, he was an an avid sports enthusiast and athlete always cheering on his favorite teams, the Syracuse Orange and Buffalo Bills.
Bill was a 40 year member of the Pastimes Athletic Club, and a 53 year member of the Syracuse Turners Club where he served over 20 years as an officer and board member. He was an active member at both clubs, participating in their bowling, basketball, softball and golf leagues. Bill was an avid golfer spending much of his spare time on the golf course, particularly when he and his brother were planning their annual golf tournament at Thendara.
His work career included 34 years at John Deere where he worked the majority of his time as as Settlement Auditor, transitioning to Parts Distribution when the Syracuse branch office closed.
Being a man who couldn’t sit still, he also has his “side jobs” as he called them, before and after his retirement from John Deere. He started as an usher at Archbold Stadium and continued at the Dome for 42 years. He also ushered at the War Memorial, Civic Center and Syracuse Chiefs Ball Park for over 20 years.
He made many friends and enjoyed the comaraderie those jobs brought. He always greeted the fans with a smile and small talk, maintaining some of those friendships after his ushering ended.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Barbara of 56 years, his beloved son Craig, sisters Bonnie Schafer(Mike), Sandra Fesko(Tim), brother Brad Hooper(Roberta) and 14 nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call on Friday, March 13, 2026 from 4:00PM-7:00PM at New Comer Cremations and Funerals, 705 N. Main St, North Syracuse. A funeral mass will be held Saturday at 9AM at Assumption Church, 812 N. Salina St, Syracuse. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Warners.
