1939 - 2020

Joseph C. Smith, age 80,born April 23, 1939 died peacefully on January 13th, 2020 at St Joseph hospital in Syracuse N.Y. Before his passing, he resided in Watertown N.Y with his loving wife, Anne.

Joseph was born and raised in Saranac Lake, N.Y to Mary( Fletcher) Smith and Oliver Smith of 10 Park Avenue.

He was a Vietnam veteran and retired from the NYS dept of corrections and shortly thereafter, relocated to Gaston S.C for 23 yrs and had moved back to NYS a few yrs ago,to be closer to his children. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing. He also enjoyed playing the harmonica, banjo and jitterbug with his wife. He enjoyed history, politics and reading. Joseph was known for his funny sense of humor and kind, gentle heart. He especially loved his animals and family.

He is survived by his wife ,Anne( Sharlow) Smith And mother in law, Shirley Sharlow of Florida, Brother in law, Tom Sharlow, Sister in law’s, Barb Sharlow and Susan Sharlow, as well as daughter Jodi Smith and her significant other, Vaughn Lewis of Albion NY, daughter, Amanda Smith of Watertown N.Y. And son, ( Leslie) John Smith and his fiance Melissa Brown- Schmidt of Harrishville,NY. , six grandchildren, Julia -Anne LaMora, Ivan, David and Christa Irvine of Saranac Lake NY. Caitlyn and Colton( CJ) Smith of Washington State ,as well as 3 great grandchildren and one on the way . He has two surviving siblings, Beverly Groth of Rochester, N.Y. And Donna Hart of Utica,N.Y.

He is joined in heaven with seven siblings, Patricia Howe, Dorothy Naegele, Shirley LaMas , Jone Neese, Diana Shumway, ( Oliver) Ike Smith and (John) Jack Smith, several nieces and nephews and many cousins.

All donations are to kindly be made to palliative care at ST. Joseph hospital in Syracuse N.Y. There will be no calling hrs. A celebration of life will take place later this year at Fort Drum, N.Y.
